about

This work is a free adaptation of Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities". In Calvino's novel, the cities have female names and appear in a rigorous symmetric order.

The album is a journey through the eleven thematic groups which encompass the fifty-five cities. Six improvised duets intersect with five septets. This pattern evokes the structure of the novel, whereby each chapter opens and closes with an intimate dialogue between Marco Polo and the emperor Kublai Khan.

I am deeply grateful to the extraordinary musicians who contributed to this project with their art and humanity. I'm strongly thankful to Francesco Sinatora for his important help and friendship. This album is for my mother, Juanita. (E.M.)
